Today is a student choice activity for earthquakes. You will choose and complete one of the following options. You can use your notes as well as the text book for reference information.
Today you will design, build and test a model structure made out of 35 uncooked spaghetti noodles and 20 mini marshmallows. Your structure must hold an egg and help it survive an earthquake. Your model will be tested on a specially built earthquake machine. This machine simulates the stresses that occur during earthquakes. Follow the guidelines found on the worksheet to build your structure.
Modeling Earthquakes We continued working on earthquakes today by doing a bookwork assignment and looking at 2 different scales that measure earthquakes. The Richter scale gives a numerical value to the energy of the earthquake, while the Mercalli scale describes the energy from what observers witnessed.
Earthquake Bookwork Richter/Mercalli Scales We looked at earthquakes and how different types of faults or movement will happen depending on the type of stress is applied and what type of boundary is present.

Kids Discover Volcanoes Worksheet Today we looked at different types of volcanoes. We also did a bookwork activity to deepen our understanding of each type of volcano.
